Nagula Chavithi (नगुला चाविथि 2023) is a major festival celebrated in South India which is celebrated every year on the fourth day of Diwali. This festival is similar to Nag Panchami (नाग पंचमी) of North India. Married women also celebrate this day for the well being and long life of their children. During the Nagula Chavithi festival,women observe a the full day fast and perform Nag Puja ( नागा पूजा). Devotees offer milk and dry fruits (दूध और सूखे मेवे) to the snake deity. The festival of worshipping Nag Devta (Nag Gods), is primarily a festival of women. It is a Kartik month’s important festival which is celebrated in some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (आंध्र प्रदेश और तमिलनाडु). This is an auspicious day dedicated to worshiping the serpent deities (नाग देवता). Rituals (अनुष्ठान) and worship procedures vary from place to place. Some people keep the idol of Nag Devta in the house and worship it. Worship and prayers are performed in Naga temples across the state.

Nagula Chavithi Puja Vidhi and Rituals | नगुला चविथि अनुष्ठान और पूजा विधि

  • After getting clean and wearing suitable clothes for the ritual, the resolution of worship is taken.
  • After the resolution, the Sun God (सूर्य देवता), Deep (दिप), Bhumi (भूमि) and Varun God (वरुण देवता) are worshipped.
  • Wake-up early morning and take a bath, wear new cloth.
  • Worship in front of Mahadev Shiva and Mata Gauri.
  • Now lay a seat on the puja post (पूजा चौकी पर आसन बिछाये).
  • Establish the idols of Nag Devta and worship them duly (नाग देवता की मूर्तियों को स्थापित करे और विधिवत पूजा करे).
  • Ant hills are the abode of snakes, so We should go and worship by offering milk (दूध), kumkum (कुमकुम) and special sweets (मिठाई).
  • Light diyas near the ant hills (चींटी की पहाड़ियों के पास दीये जलाये).
  • During the Puja, take some soil and apply it on the back side of the ear.
  • Recite Nagula Chavithi Puja Mantra (नगुला चविथि पूजा मंत्र).
  • Offer Milk, fruits, flowers, akshat and puja samgagri, etc to Nag Devta .
  • Perform Nag Devta aarti now.
  • Put your wishes in front of them (अपनी मनोकामना रखें).
  • Similarly worship in Shubm muhurat time.
  • Go to the Naga temple and offer prayers.

सर्वे नागाः प्रीयन्तां मे ये केचित् पृथ्वीतले।

ये च हेलिमरीचिस्था येऽन्तरे दिवि संस्थिताः॥

ये नदीषु महानागा ये सरस्वतिगामिनः।

ये च वापीतडगेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वै नमः॥

अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम्।

शङ्ख पालं धृतराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा॥
